A phantom assembly is a collection of products that can be added to a bill of material. Phantom assemblies are not built and stored in inventory, but instead are used to simplify the creation of bills of material.
Example A company manufactures bicycles. Many of the manufactured products for the company use a phantom assembly for 26-inch wheels. The wheels are made up of spokes, rims, and tires. Bills of material for the bicycles include the 26-inch wheel phantom assembly, and do not need to specify the components of the wheels.
To designate a product as a phantom assembly, select the Kit Item check box and the Phantom Assembly / Kit radio button in Product Maintenance. You can set up a bill of material to specify the components for the phantom assembly in Bill of Material Maintenance. After the bill of material for the phantom assembly is set up, the phantom assembly can be added as a component on bills of material for manufactured products. When material is issued for the manufactured products, all the required components of the phantom assembly are included on the printed work order.
