Question: What is the difference between a drop-ship and a direct-ship order?
Answer: The differences are:
Drop ship - A sales order drop-ship line item directly creates a new purchase order, and the sales order drop-ship line item is shipped all at once. For more information, see Drop Ship Orders Process Flow.
Direct ship - A sales order direct-ship line item does not directly create a new purchase order. Rather, it is linked to a special type of purchase order, a blanket order, where it can have multiple releases (shipments) over many shipping dates. For more information, see Blanket Purchase Order Process Flow.
Question: Can a direct ship be done without using Container Management and Shipment Management?
Answer: Not at the present time. A direct ship must be loaded into containers and put on shipments for the process to work.
Question: Do I have to enter a sales order direct ship line item before a blanket purchase order is entered, or vice versa?
Answer: The order of what is entered first is irrelevant. You can enter the blanket purchase order or the sales order line first. The subsequent linkage can occur either from Order Entry or from Purchase Order Maintenance.
Question: What are the limitations of using blanket purchase orders and direct ships?
Answer: The following limitations currently apply:
Limitation |
Description |
Release |
A release can only go into one container (and therefore, only one shipment); a release can only be for one warehouse location. |
Container |
A container can have multiple releases for one or more blanket purchase orders. It can also have different customer direct ships, and can be for both direct ship and warehouse locations. However, one container cannot be a mix of blanket purchase order releases and regular purchase orders. |
Canceling a release |
This can be done until it is on a shipment. Note You must remove the release from the shipment to cancel it. |
Finalization |
A release cannot be finalized until it is on a shipment/container. |
Question: How can I access Blanket Purchase Order Release Entry?
Answer: It does not appear on a menu. It can be accessed in one of the following ways:
Purchase Order Maintenance - A blanket purchase order must first be created. Select the purchase order (without being in Edit mode) and on the Items tab, select a line item and click the Release button in the ribbon. This will pass the blanket purchase order line item information to Blanket Purchase Order Release Entry.
Order Entry - A sales order must first be created with a direct ship line item. Select the sales order (without being in Edit mode) and on the Items tab, select a direct ship line item and click the Release button in the ribbon. This will pass the sales order line item information to Blanket Purchase Order Release Entry.
