Weight and Volume Calculations on Purchase Orders FAQ

Question: What is the hierarchy of assigning unit weights and volumes when entering P/O Line Items?

Answer: Weights and volumes can be stored in multiple areas. The following table lists the search hierarchy and conversion calculations:

Calculations/Conversions

1

Product Location Maintenance

Weight is stored for each unit of measure of a product at a location in the specified weight unit of measure. No conversion is required during line item entry.

Volume (cube) can be stored as:

  • a discrete value with an associated cube unit of measure (example, 10 cubic feet)

  • the height, width, and length in an associated dimensional unit of measure (example, 10" x 5" x 3")

Note The selection in the Calculate Volume by field in Warehouse Management Control Maintenance determines how volume is calculated. Height, length, and width all must have non-zero values or volume will not be calculated from here.

2

Putaway Group Maintenance

Weight and weight unit of measure are optionally stored in a putaway group. If a product/location/unit of measure has a putaway group associated with it, use the weight and weight unit of measure associated with it. No conversion is required during line item entry.

3

Product Maintenance

Unit weight and weight unit of measure are stored in the product’s stock (lowest level) unit of measure. Conversion is required during line item entry if the user selects a unit of measure other than the stock unit of measure.

If Each is the purchase order line item unit of measure, then the unit weight of 10 lbs. and the unit volume of 1000 cuin. (10 x 10 x 10) would be selected from putaway group AAA.

If Carton/3 is the purchase order line item unit of measure, then the unit weight of 32 lbs. and the unit volume of 3100 cuin. (10 x 31 x 10) would be selected from the product/location unit of measure.

If Pallet/30 is the purchase order line item unit of measure, then the unit weight of 400 lbs. would be selected from the product/location unit of measure, and the unit volume of 30000 cuin. would be selected by converting the 1000 cuin. unit volume for the product and multiplying it by the conversion rate of 30.

Note The volume could not be calculated from the product/location/unit of measure because the depth was 0.
