Purpose

Define product code elements and overall format.

Overview

Use Product Code Length Maintenance to define the elements and length of a company’s product codes. You can create up to ten elements for product codes (including the default) for a total length not to exceed 35. The product code elements can be validated to insure validation checking.

Example If you have an intelligent (each element of the product code has a specific meaning) and a consistent part numbering system, you may want to create multiple elements.

If you are modifying your existing product code structure, you can add to the length of an existing element, and add new elements at the end of the existing structure. However, you cannot do the following:

Delete elements
Insert elements
Reduce the length of an element below the length of the longest existing product code record (not including blanks)

Ribbon Home Tab Buttons

Button	Description
Exit	Click this button to close the Product Code Length Maintenance window.
Update	Click this button to update product code elements and format.
OK	Click this button to accept an action. This button is only available after you click the Update button in the ribbon.
Cancel	Click this button to cancel an action. This button is only available after you click the Update button in the ribbon.

Main Tab Fields and Buttons

Field or Button	Description
Element Description	Enter up to ten product code elements. By default, a product code element called Default is the first element description, but you can overwrite this.
Length	Enter the length of each product code element. The sum of all product code element lengths must not exceed 35 characters. Note The overall maximum length of the product code directly affects the size of the Product Code column in grids that use product code. You should therefore keep it as small as possible to maximize screen functionality. Also, you cannot reduce the product code length below the longest product code length already set up.
Validate	Select this check box if you want to require product code elements be created in Product Code Element Maintenance for the element before setting up product codes.
Separator	Click the Lookup button to indicate the separator character (period, dash, or slash) to use between elements. Example 111-0000-22 becomes 111.0000.22 if you select a period as the separator.
Code Resolution	This grid displays the code resolution. Select supplier or category code resolution. This grid is slated for functionality in a future release.
Padding Method	Select a method of filling product elements that fall short of the defined length for that element. The system creates each account element padded to the full defined length in the manner selected in this field. Select one of the following: Trailing Blanks Leading Blanks Leading Zeros Trailing Zeros Example There is a product element Size which is 6 characters long, and you select trailing zeros as your padding method. If you create an element with a Size of 34, the system will create the product code with a Size of 340000. Note If you use trailing or leading blanks, and all product codes have trailing or leading blanks, you can reduce the length of an element to remove the blanks. If you use trailing or leading zeros, you cannot reduce the length of elements.
