Creating a product on the fly is the capability to add a new product to an order during the order entry process. These products can then be easily passed to the purchasing system. On the fly products can be added for sales orders and quote orders. This capability is designed for special order products that are not stocked. However, it can be used for regular products, as well as drop ship products. If creating a regular product, note that the order will be backordered until inventory exists for the product. If creating a non-stocked, special order, or drop ship product, inventory will not be allocated.
The default setting to create a new product during order entry is set up on the Order Entry tab in Customer Service Control Maintenance. To control on the fly product creation, select one of the following values in the On the Fly Product Creation field
Allowed - You can create merchandise products (stock and non-stock) and service products on-the-fly.
Non Stock Only - You can create only non-stock products on-the-fly.
Not Allowed - You cannot create on-the-fly products during order entry.
These options can be set up for specific user ID's in User Extended Options, where the same field appears. This allows for certain individuals to obtain an option other than the default assigned for the order entry system in Customer Service Control Maintenance.
If Allowed or Non Stock Only is selected for your user ID, the New Item button appears below the Name field in O/E Line Item Entry. Click the New Item button to create a new product in Product Definition.
To create a new product during order entry line item processing, enter data in the necessary fields, and make appropriate selections.
NOTE A product created on the fly includes only a minimal amount of data, and is created for a single location. Any enhancements to the product should be updated either in Product Maintenance or by location in Product Location Maintenance.
