Shipment Carrier Selection FAQ

Question: Many customers have routing guides that need to be followed to avoid chargebacks. Is there a way to set these up?

Answer: Yes, perform the following steps:

  1. In Shipper Maintenance, indicate if the carrier is a small package carrier (for example, UPS).

  2. In Customer Shipping Rule Maintenance, set up the shipping rules for the customer.

  3. In Location Maintenance, select the Use Automatic Freight Carrier Consolidation check box.

Question: What happens if an order has a shipper already assigned to it?

Answer: Using automatic shipment carrier selection pre-supposes that the shipper is not assigned during order entry. If a shipper is assigned to an order, then that shipper is considered an override (the exception to the rule) and the automatic shipment carrier selection determination is bypassed. Additionally, if a shipper is specified on a planned bill of lading for an order, this overrides any shipper specified on the order and the shipper determined by shipping rules.

Question: Can you use automatic shipment carrier selection if you are doing pick/pack and the contents of a carton are not determined until you perform pick demand confirmation?

Answer: Generally, no. Contact your Apprise project manager to discuss the options further.

Question: At what point is the carrier selected?

Answer: See the below rules.

Comments

There is a hierarchal search of rules from most specific to least specific.

A rule specific to a store ID takes precedence over a rule for an entire customer. The rules hierarchy is:

  1. ship-to or store number / shipping location

  2. billing customer / shipping location / postal code range

  3. paying customer / shipping location / postal code range

  4. postal code of the ship-to customer

  5. system default (a record entered with All selected for all fields)

The pick demand print process is the trigger for determining what carrier to select.

This process not only prints manual pick demands, but also creates pick tasks if Wireless Warehouse is being used.

All orders for the same ship-to customer are consolidated for purposes of determining the carrier and the freight terms. A determination of LTL or small package carrier is made.

Example If there are five orders going to customer ABC, and two go to ship-to #10, and three go to ship-to #20, then each ship-to gets its own carrier selection.

A bill of lading is automatically produced for carriers not marked as small package carriers.

This happens after all cartons are created for the shipment, and the bill of lading is populated with the selected carrier and freight collection terms.

An order is freight free if it exceeds the designated freight free amount.

The orders would be marked as prepaid.
