Question: How and when do customer reservations affect inventory allocations?
Answer: Inventory is allocated as soon as you make the reservation for a Reserve Now reservation type. When a sales order is entered, it reduces the reservation and does not create an additional allocated quantity. If a sales order line that originated from a customer reservation is deleted or cancelled, it is added back to the customer reservation. Here’s an example of what happens:

Question: Can you reserve more than what is currently available?
Answer: No, you can only reserve up to the current quantity available for a Reserve Now reservation type. For a Future Receipt reservation type, you can indicate a percentage of each receipt up to an expiration date that can be reserved when received. For a future receipt reservation, you can also reserve quantities from a specific open purchase order.
Question: What happens if an order is entered for more than the customer reservation quantity?
Answer: If there is available inventory, the additional quantity is allocated. If not, the additional quantity is backordered.
Question: How do customer reservations work with future orders?
Answer: Future order allocations override customer inventory reservations. If an order’s required date is outside of the allocation days of the product at a location, the order line will not be immediately allocated to reduce the customer’s reservation quantity. The order will show quantity future, not quantity allocated.
Question: If there is a reservation for a customer and a customer division, are the reservations added together?
Answer: No. Reservations are not cumulative. Customer reservations take precedence over billing customer reservations, and both take precedence over customer division reservations.
Example 10 units are reserved for Division A and 20 units are reserved for Customer A, which is assigned to Division A. Customer A places a sales order for 30 units. Only the 20 unit reservation for the customer is used.
Question: Can I reallocate inventory from a reservation to another sales order?
Answer: Yes, if the Allow Inventory Reservations to be Reallocated check box is selected in Customer Service Control Maintenance and the Reallocation Allowed check box is selected for the reservation in Product Inventory Reservation Maintenance or Customer Inventory Reservation Maintenance. You can use Order Allocation Management to reallocate inventory from a reservation (if it is allowed).
