Order Line Commission FAQ

Question: How do I set up commissions to handle multiple sales representatives selling specific product lines to the same customers?

Answer: Perform the following steps:

  1. In Customer Maintenance, select the Sales Representative By Line Item check box on the Sales tab for each customer where there are multiple sales representatives selling specific products to that customer.

  2. In Product Line Maintenance, set up product lines.

  3. In Style Maintenance, set up styles and link the styles to product lines.

  4. In Commission Class Maintenance, optionally, set up commission class names (these may be the same as product line names).

  5. In Commission Book Maintenance, optionally, set up commission books to group customers.

  6. In Product Maintenance, assign a style and commission class to each product.

  7. In Product Line Group Maintenance, group together date-ranged product lines for commission purposes.

  8. In Commission Rate Maintenance, set up each sales representative's date-ranged commissions (using a commission class typically).

  9. In Customer Product Line Group Maintenance, for each relevant customer, associate the product line groups that are commissionable.

  10. In Sales Representative Product Line Group Maintenance, for each sales representative, associate the product line groups that they are responsible for selling.

Example Customer ABC Store buys candy, fruit and gum and is serviced by sales representatives Joe, Sally, and Harry.

The product lines and product line groups are:

Product Lines

Product Line Group Name

Mars, Hershey’s

Candy

Wrigleys, Yummy

Gum

Oranges, Apples

Fruit

Potatoes, Onions

Vegetables

The sales representative assignments are:

Sales Representative

Assigned Product Line Group Names

Joe

Candy

Sally

Gum

Harry

Fruit, Vegetables

The customer is commissionable on the following:

Customer

Assigned Product Line Group Names

ABC Store

Candy, Gum, Fruit

The commission matrix is set up as follows:

Sales Representative

Commission Class

Customer

Commission Rate

Date Range

Joe

Candy

ABC Store

5.0%

01/01/2020-12/31/2020

Sally

Gum

ABC Store

4.0%

01/01/2020-12/31/2020

Harry

Fruit

ABC Store

3.0%

01/01/2020-12/31/2020

When ABC Store buys a case/100 of Hershey’s chocolate bars for $100, the commission logic reviews the commission matrix and knows that Sally is a sales representative, but only sells the Gum product line group. The same is true for Harry who only sells the Fruit product line group. The software determines that Joe sells the Candy product line group (in which the Hershey’s chocolate bars are included), and he is chosen as the sales representative for the order line at a rate of 5.0%.

Question: How do I set up commissions to handle multiple sales representatives selling specific products without using product lines?

Answer: In Commission Rate Maintenance, select the Used for Sales Representative Selection check box for a commission rate. The commission rate will then be used to determine the sales representative during invoice creation. If you also set up commissions to handle multiple sales representatives selling specific product lines to the same customers, those commission rates take precedence over the rates for which the Used for Sales Representative Selection check box is selected.
