Unit of Measure Fields FAQ

Question: How does the system track units of measure for products?

Answer: When a product is defined, it can have multiple units of measure for stocking, selling, purchasing, receiving, and displaying. The units of measure are set up in Product Maintenance and Product Location Maintenance.

The system internally tracks on-hand product quantities by unit of measure. As purchase orders are received, they go into inventory based on the receipt unit of measure.

Note For example, that means you can see that you have 4 cases/500, 2 cases/125, 5 bunches/25, and 25 stems in Inventory Matrix Inquiry. Products and their related quantities and units of measure can be stored in any zone.

The following table lists all the unit of measure related fields. These fields can be seen in Product Category Maintenance, Product Maintenance, and Product Location Maintenance as indicated below.

Product Units of Measure

These are the units of measure for each product. The base unit of measure is one that is defined for a product in Product Maintenance. A base unit of measure is generally considered the smallest unit of measure that an inventory-related transaction can have.

Dflt. Purch

Select this check box if this unit of measure is the default unit of measure for purchase orders. You can purchase in more than one unit of measure, but you can only define one default. Demand forecasting, Min-Max Buying Recommendations, and Purchase Order Maintenance use this unit of measure.

Note If you change the default purchasing unit of measure, the minimum/maximum stock level, safety stock, minimum purchase quantity, purchase increment, and expected normal forecast are adjusted automatically. You should review these values to ensure each is correct.

Dflt. Display

Select this check box if this is the unit of measure you want to use for displaying the product in various inquiries and reports. Inventory Matrix Inquiry uses the default assigned here to display a product/location record.

Dflt. Rcpt

Select this check box if this is the unit of measure in which you want to receive, regardless of the purchasing unit of measure.

Note The software keeps track of inventory by unit of measure. Inventory by unit of measure is used during pick demand creation. For example, if your supplier requires your purchase order for a product to be in a master case unit of measure, but you want to put it away as eaches, you would set the default receipt unit of measure to each.

Break to U/M

If this unit of measure can be broken down into a smaller unit of measure (or assembled up to a larger unit of measure), enter the unit of measure into this field. If nothing is entered in this field, it is assumed that this unit of measure cannot be broken down (or assembled up).

Example A pallet/100 unit of measure is broken down into the case/10 unit of measure, which is broken down to the each unit of measure. If a promotional 2-pack unit of measure bundled in special packaging was sold for this product, it would not be broken down to the each unit of measure.

This defaults to the next smallest unit of measure selected for the product to which the unit of measure can be evenly broken down.

Example The following units of measure are set up in Unit of Measure Maintenance: Each (1 unit), Case50 (50 units), Case72 (72 units), and Case100 (100 units). If Case50 and Each are selected units of measure for a product and you select Case100 for the product, the break-to unit of measure defaults to Case50 for the Case 100 unit of measure. However, if you select the Case72 unit of measure for the product, the break-to unit of measure defaults to Each for it because the Case72 unit of measure cannot be evenly broken down into the Case50 unit of measure.

Note For a unit of measure that is equivalent to the product unit of measure, the break-to unit of measure defaults to the product unit of measure.

Web

Select this check box if this unit of measure is available on customer portal sites.

EXAMPLE Product A is set up with the following units of measure: Each and Case12. The following inventory is available: 100 Each and 40 Case12. If this check box is only selected for the Each unit of measure, the customer will see 580 Each on the customer portal. If the check box in this column is only selected for Case12, the customer will see 48 Case12 on the customer portal (decimal cases cannot be sold, and therefore 4 Each will not be converted to Case12). If this check box is selected for both Each and Case12, the customer will see 100 Each and 40 Case12.
