Overview

Use Buying Method Maintenance to construct buying rules that control the buying patterns of products stored in each warehouse location. For more information on setting up buying methods, see Distribution Resource Planning Overview. A buying method must be assigned to every product/warehouse location.

Note You can build standard and custom buying methods based on different parameters and programming logic.

A buying method is a unique combination of the following methods:

Method

Description

Forecast Method

Forecasts future sales. For more information, see Forecast Method Maintenance.

Sales Filter Method

Identifies unusual, one-time sales spikes not expected to recur in the forecast. For more information, see Sales Filter Method Maintenance

Safety Stock Method

Calculates extra stock to cover forecast shortfalls. For more information, see Safety Stock Method Maintenance.

Reorder Trigger Method

Determines when a product needs to be reordered. For more information, see Reorder Trigger Method Maintenance.

Reorder Quantity Method

Note For each of the above methods used in a buying method, you can change any of the parameters and it will affect only that buying method.

Example The Core Products buying method has a forecast method of Average. The default parameter Time Bucket for the Average forecast method has a value of Week. It is changed to Month, and this change only affects the Core Products buying method.

Forecast Sales History Date

Select the date to use for forecast history. You can select one of the following options:

  • Sales Order Required Date - When an invoice is posted to forecast history, it uses the required date of the order. In some businesses where backorders and transportation factors significantly determine when an order gets shipped, the order’s required date is a better determinate of demand than the actual invoice date.

Example An order for 1,000 of product ABC with a required date of 12/1/2020 is shipped and invoiced on 1/5/2021. The forecast history for 12/1/2020 will be updated by 1,000 when the invoice is posted on 1/5/2021.

  • Invoice Date - When an invoice is posted to forecast history, it uses the invoice date.

Example An order for 1,000 of product ABC with a required date of 12/1/2020 is shipped and invoiced on 1/5/2021. The forecast history for 1/5/2021 will be updated by 1,000 when the invoice is posted on 1/5/2021.
